Artificial intelligence is changing online behavior: how people search for information, evaluate brands, and make purchasing decisions. This affects almost every area of marketing. Building online visibility now extends beyond SEO, while GEO, optimization aimed at establishing a brand as an authority and a credible source of knowledge in its field, is gaining importance. Achieving this requires broad activity across multiple channels, including those beyond the brand’s own ecosystem.

Brand mentions, content, SEO, PR, and email marketing complement one another, creating a coherent ecosystem of information about a brand that influences both its visibility and how audiences perceive it. Each of these channels can affect a different stage of the subscriber journey, ultimately contributing to conversion and customer retention. So, how can these activities be integrated into an effective marketing strategy in 2026?

From keywords to earned media mentions

In traditional SEO, success was measured by a website’s position in search results for keywords, the most popular queries associated with a particular service or product. Searching with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews takes this several steps further: A language model first interprets the query, then searches through and selects information from multiple sources before analyzing it and generating an answer. This shift means that people no longer need to click a link and visit a website to find the answer they are looking for.

At the same time, AI algorithms select content differently from traditional search engines. According to a 2025 study, generative systems prefer independent external sources, known as earned media, over content published directly by brands or sponsored by them.

What does this mean in practice?

Even a highly valuable company blog packed with expert articles may not be enough for LLMs to perceive your brand as an authority. Today, authority needs to be built through credible external sources, using activities closely related to digital PR to earn valuable, natural mentions, known as brand mentions.

Citations vs. brand mentions

To prepare a visibility strategy more effectively, it is worth understanding the difference between citations and brand mentions. Many people assume that being cited automatically means that a brand is visible in AI-generated answers. The data, however, tells a different story.

A citation is a source link provided by the model. A Semrush study conducted in collaboration with Kevin Indig and Growth Memo, covering 3,981 domain appearances across 115 queries in 14 countries, found that almost 62% of citations were so-called ghost citations: references where the brand name did not appear anywhere in the AI-generated answer.

A mention, or brand mention, means that the brand is explicitly named within the AI-generated response. For informational queries, citations appear in 89.3% of cases, while brand mentions appear in just 18%. The picture changes for comparison queries, where the brand mention rate rises to 43.3%.

A mention therefore acts as a recommendation, while a citation is the path that can lead to it.

Interestingly, in the study mentioned above, Gemini was significantly more likely to mention brands directly in its answers, while ChatGPT more often provided sources. Therefore, it is worth monitoring both types of visibility.

A GEO strategy should extend beyond optimizing a brand’s own website and pursue both objectives simultaneously: increasing the number of valuable sources AI can cite and strengthening brand recognition to improve the chances of being mentioned.

The prompt-to-purchase effect and email as an anchor

The importance of brand mentions goes beyond visibility alone. A brand recommendation from AI can mark the beginning of the user’s next step and trigger a decision-making process that ultimately leads to a purchase.

The 2026 From prompt to purchase study analyzed the impact of AI brand recommendations on customers’ purchasing journeys. It recorded increases in branded Google searches and visits to brand and retailer websites following an AI recommendation. Branded searches increased by 4.3 percentage points, while visits to brand websites rose by just over 2.4 percentage points.

This suggests that the customer journey may increasingly follow a chain like this:

AI recommendation → brand awareness → branded search → website visit → newsletter sign-up → conversion.

This is where the channels begin to overlap. AI can initiate contact with the brand, while search and the website can take over and move the relationship into email, an owned channel. The brand can then reduce its dependence on algorithms or on repeatedly paying for access to its audience. With the subscriber’s consent, it can build a direct relationship and use information about their interests to personalize communication.

How can you turn AI traffic into newsletter sign-ups?

A visit generated by an AI recommendation or search engine is only part of the journey. Turning that visit into a lead requires more than simply directing someone to a website. The key is to make signing up for the newsletter as easy as possible and, before that, to give the visitor a compelling reason to do so.

Depending on the industry, the incentive could be a discount code, a practical eBook, or access to other free resources. A pop-up presenting the offer can appear shortly after the visitor lands on the page or just before they leave. This type of lead magnet serves as a value exchange that makes people more willing to provide their email address.

The form’s visibility, simplicity, and minimalist approach also matter. Ideally, ask only for an email address, as the more fields people have to complete, the greater the friction. Of course, all necessary marketing consents must also be taken into account.

An effective CTA should communicate a clear benefit, for example, “Get my 10% discount” or “Download my free eBook.” These may seem like small details, yet they can ultimately have a major impact on conversion rates.

A clear value exchange combined with intuitive UX completes the “prompt-to-purchase” chain, turning a casual visitor into an engaged audience member within your own channel.

Your email now has two audiences: The reader and the algorithm

When an LLM recommendation directs a visitor to a brand’s website, and we successfully encourage them to leave their email address, a wide range of opportunities opens up, provided we understand how email marketing works today.

In 2026, email marketing also faces the challenge of GEO. Email assistants such as Apple Intelligence and Microsoft Copilot analyze incoming messages before recipients even open their inboxes. They scan and classify emails as an “important summary,” a “low-priority promotion,” or spam.

According to Stripo research, personalized email campaigns achieve a 41% higher CTR than non-personalized ones. The key condition for achieving this uplift? Optimizing for context and value rather than intrusiveness.

The most effective practices involve constructing subject lines, preview text, and email content in a way that helps LLMs and inbox selection systems understand the message and recognize it as valuable and useful to the recipient.

Personalization is crucial, and effective personalization depends on advanced audience segmentation based on real-time insights into subscribers’ interests, stage in the customer journey, interaction history, and content preferences.

What clearly performs poorly today? Mass spam, lack of personalization, generic and overly broad content, missing context, and communication that ignores recipient behavior. This is where it becomes clear why marketers need to go one step further.

Don’t choose between AI Search, SEO, PR, and email: Connect them

There is no evidence to suggest that sending a newsletter or achieving a high email campaign CTR directly improves a brand’s visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google AI. The relationship between these channels is indirect and more subtle: Each can provide data and signals that strengthen the performance of the others.

The AI era is reshaping some marketing activities while also creating an opportunity to build strategies in which different channels reinforce one another.

In practice, the process can look like this:

digital PR and off-site activities

valuable brand mentions

greater chance of being recommended by AI

branded search and website visit

newsletter sign-up

personalised communication

data about audience interests

better content and further PR activity

Digital PR and off-site activities increase the number of valuable brand mentions, which can contribute to a stronger presence in AI-generated answers. Once visitors reach the website, they can take the next step: subscribe to a newsletter, download a resource, or establish another form of contact.

From that point onwards, communication moves into an owned channel where the brand can, with the recipient’s consent, collect information about their interests, behavior, and stage of the customer journey.

Crucially, this information does not need to remain confined to the email marketing system. It allows marketers to better understand their audiences’ needs and concerns, plan content, and select topics for future PR activities.

At this point, the process begins again: Data from one channel becomes fuel for the next.

This is where AI search, brand mentions, and email marketing come together: AI helps people discover a brand, PR activity builds its credibility, the website turns interest into contact, and email develops that relationship while generating further valuable insights for future marketing campaigns.

Wrapping up

An effective marketing strategy has long depended on connecting activities across different channels into a coherent message, and in the AI era, this integration has become particularly important. Channels should complement one another: building visibility, capturing user attention, turning that attention into a relationship, and generating data that can inform future interactions with potential customers.

The better these elements work together, the easier it becomes to build a brand that is visible, recognizable, credible, and present at the right stage of the customer journey. A brand’s external and owned channels therefore form an interconnected system in which every audience interaction can generate insights that strengthen the activities that follow.
